Do Name Brands Make a Difference?

This is a common question that I am asked by friends when they become aware of my hobby of thrifting. I have to say, there are a few brands that I stand by for quality. However, I think each outdoor recreational brand brings their own benefits to the table of assorted retailers. For example, I swear by Nike for running and workout gear. The quality is top notch and Nike is often found at thrift stores in excellent condition. I have a closet-full of Nike sweatshirts that were thrifted in almost perfect condition.

However, Patagonia or The North Face is the go-to for ski apparel. The quality is remarkable, and both retailers have locations to send worn gear to be fixed at discounted prices. In addition, both of these brands are heavily sold at REI and can often be racked on clearance sections. All of my ski apparel is predominately The North Face or Patagonia and was found at reduced prices. I highly recommend these two brands.

For hiking, I would recommend either Columbia, generic REI, or Eddie Bower. Eddie Bower sells retail adventure clothing to lower prices and I have found the quality is similar to the more expensive brands. I recommend checking their website or finding a physical location. In addition, these three brands are located at many thrift stores and can usually be found in good condition. I recommend all of these brands because each of these retailers sell at reduced prices and are often available at second-hand retailers.
